What is Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)?
Stress Urinary Incontinence or Urinary Stress Incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine associated with coughing, sneezing or laughing. Stress refers to physical stress and urine leak can occur during heavy stress like sports or minimal stress like getting up from a seated position.
What causes Stress Urinary Incontinence?
The pathology is pelvic floor weakness which arises from repeated trauma to the pelvic floor. Though ageing, chronic bronchitis, constipation, prior hysterectomy, neurological problems and obesity contribute, the main culprit is vaginal delivery. Instrumental delivery increases pelvic floor trauma and also contributes.
What are the symptoms of Stress Urinary Incontinence?
Patients usually complain of Urine leak with coughing, sneezing, laughing, while playing or going to the gym. Sometimes women with severe symptoms have urine leak while turning in bed or getting up from a seated position.
How do we investigate a patient with Stress Urinary Incontinence?
The investigations for a patient with Stress Urinary Incontinence would involve a Urine dip, Ultrasound of the Kidneys and Bladder, Urodynamics and Cystoscopy. Patient quality of life questionnaires would sometimes be handed out to assess the severity of the problem.
Non Surgical Treatment for Stress Urinary Incontinence
Treatment for Stress Urinary Incontinence often times depends on the severity of the problem. Mild incontinence can be treated by pelvic floor muscle exercises (Kegel exercises). These exercises are advised daily and the improvement can be up to 70%. However, the effects are felt only till the exercises are done and will reverse once the activity stops.
